WWII Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. "Hornet" Model Kit, by Pyro. One of Pyro's famous line, "Table Top Navy" which you could build both as a "waterline" model for "setting up your own sea battles" or as a full-hulled display piece...this one is the famous U.S.S. "Hornet". The aircraft carrier that saw action starting with launching the bombers of Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, Japan in April 1942 in retaliation for Pearl Harbor (this was the FIRST strike on the Japanese homeland in the War made by U.S. forces). She later fought courageously at the Battle of Midway two months later, where four (!) Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk, taking 250+ planes of the Japanese air force to the bottom of the Pacific. During the Solomons campaign, "Hornet" was heavily damaged by the Japanese, throwing everything they had at her from planes and ships...an "abandon ship" was ordered, and the U.S. attempted to scuttle her...but she wouldn't go down! The Japanese finally had to finish "Hornet" with a hail of torpedoes. Incredible! This model kit of "Hornet" is a must-have for your collection...a highly-detailed kit for being such a miniature (the flight deck measures 8")...Pyro's kits were known for being LOADED with fine detail. The kit is immaculate: UNBUILT, MINT CONDITION, PARTS STILL "TREED"...and the box is PERFECT. It is hard to find these kits now...this one is from the mid-1960's...that's almost half of a century ago, Poptoppers! Don't let this great piece of World War II history sail into someone else's collection! Only one in stock.
