1972 Miami Dolphins Earl Morrall Cup (Burger King)
[RARE]
$75.00

Miami Dolphins Earl Morrall Cup, by Burger King. A TRUE RARITY, this early sports collectors' cup from 1972 highlights the career of Earl Morrall. Born in 1934, famed quarterback Earl Morrall played for six different teams during his long pro career from 1956 until 1977. The world took notice of Morrall when, in 1968 playing for the Baltimore Colts, he was backup quarterback for the great Johnny Unitas. When Unitas was sidelined by injury during an exhibition game (!), Morrall proceeded to lead the Colts to an incredible 13-1 season record, and then to Super Bowl III (where they lost to the Jets under Joe Namath, 16-7). History repeated itself when he replaced Unitas again after he was injured in Super Bowl V, where he led the Colts to victory this time, over the Cowboys. In 1972, he was picked up, on waivers, by the Miami Dolphins for the sum of $100 (my, how times have changed) where he once again was working with former Colts coach Don Shula. Incredibly, as backup quarterback to Bob Griese, he was called in to replace him (injury, again), and led the Dolphins to the first undefeated season of any team since 1942!! During the AFC Championship game that year, Morrall was replaced by the now-healed Griese, but he went on to recieve the AFC Player of the Year Award for 1972. Morrall was the greatest backup quarterback of all time. For 21 seasons, Morrall was part of 255 games, completed 1,379 passes for 20,809 yards and scored 161 touchdowns. Phenomenal. These early Burger King football player cups are difficult to find in any condition now, as they were made of very, very thin plastic and few survived. We have two! These are in great shape for their age and fragility. Just try to find this NFL rarity anywhere else...you won't!! Cup measures 5" tall. Only two in stock.
