GoBots "Treds" Transforming Robot (Tonka) *SOLD*
[RARE]
$45.00

(Sorry, out of stock...SOLD for $45.00) GoBots "Treds" Transforming Robot, by Tonka. Back in 1983, a line of Popy and Bandai transforming robots were licensed to the Tonka Company in the US to be sold as...the GoBots! These were great little robots...well-made, diecast metal, highly detailed...but whereas they got the jump on the Takara Diaclone toys to be marketed in the US by almost a year, they were eternally doomed to second-place status when the Transformers began to be marketed...even though they were all from basically the same origins back in Japan. The GoBots were great, but their TV show tie-in was pretty bad! Just didn't have the same feel to it as the Transformers...it skewed a bit younger in its market. Here is a typical example of the GoBot line, "Treds", a "Guardian Robot Tank", released in 1985, one of a handful of Tonka's GoBots line which was not originally a "Machine Robo" entry. This little green fellow transforms from a humanoid robot into a Chrysler M1 Abrams tank! Treds shows basic "similarities" to the robot "Warpath" previously mis-marketed by Hasbro as a Transformers entry, both on store shelves (briefly) and as a mail-order special item (also briefly). Hmmmm. Treds even became a Transformer in 2004 as part of the "Mini-Vehicle" series. Sounds like one schizophrenic robot toy! And to top off the confusion, the original Treds toy was among the few GoBots to sport one of the Tonka-originated GoBot "faction logos", aping the Transformers "rub signs"...but someone at the factory messed up...Treds features the (evil) Renegade symbol rather than the (good) Guardian one, despite his friendly nature! Sporting both the Renegade symbol and a Communist star (on an American Tank!!), Treds was sold as a Guardian. Whew! What a mess. This one is MINT-CONDITION, unopened, STILL ON ITS ORIGINAL CARD! A great robot. Out of stock.
