Stark then enjoyed the life of a jet-setting playboy, until the fateful day when an exploding bomb lodged a piece of shrapnel a fraction of an inch from his heart. To save his life, and to escape from his would-be assassins, he fashioned a high-tech pacemaker into a suit of armor. On that day, Tony Stark became Iron Man. Over the years, Stark used his genius to design progressively more powerful suits of armor, and to devise special suits for space and under-sea travel. A founding member of the Avengers, Iron Man had a high profile. Stark, however, retained his secret identity, claiming Iron Man was his bodyguard.
