(Sorry, Out of stock...SOLD for $625.00) Original Voltron II / Gladiator Robot DX, by Matchbox. From 1984...and this one is in MINT, UNOPENED, FACTORY-SEALED, NEVER PLAYED CONDITION! Another great offering from yours truly, Mr. Pop Top. Incredible...an unopened...DX size Voltron II. Originally from a Japanese anime known as “Light Speed Electric God Albegas”, which featured three small humanoid robots who combined to form..."Gladiator Voltron"! Yes, this was proposed to be translated and re-edited into the "Voltron" show, for a segment to become known amongst students of Japanese sci-fi as "Gladiator Voltron: Voltron of the Middle Universe". Three pilots ran Alpha Robo (Black Gladiator), Beta Robo (Blue Gladiator), and Gamma Robo (Red Gladiator) and also were the pilots of three small aircraft: the Jet Alpha, Jet Beta, and Jet Gamma. These three aircraft were flown through small hatches into the backs of the Gladiators in order to pilot the Gladiators. The three aircraft could also combine into a single jet called the Super Albega. "Gladiator Voltron" was in the works as a chapter of the Voltron saga for US TV when the interest in "Voltron" in general began to wane amongst American viewers. Due to the lack of success in US for the second “Dairugger” Vehicle Voltron storyline on TV, this third series was never aired in the states. Only one of Matchbox’s “Voltron" toys was ever released from this aborted series (this, the phenomenal "Voltron II" DX...stands about 15" tall), and of course, there was also the beautiful, diecast, well-made Godaikin robot spaceship "Abega" (sold separately at The Pop Top Shop). This MISB "Gladiator" Voltron II is a real gem, and it's in immaculate condition, lo, these many years later. Poor, poor "Gladiator Voltron". Maybe it was that "Hey, did you hear about the happy Roman?" joke he told to the corporate suits that REALLY got his show axed from the schedule?! We'll never know. This toy was also the subject of a huge lead paint recall, so lots of these were shipped back to Matchbox to be destroyed. A RARITY, in its FACTORY-SEALED BOX. Out of stock.
