George Wallace in '68 Bumper Sticker
[RARE]
$125.00

George Wallace in '68 Bumper Sticker. A real rarity here, folks! An extremely scarce large paper "bumper sticker" for the independent Presidential run of controversial Alabama Governor George Wallace in 1968. This is printed on fragile paper and it is a wonder that it has survived all of these years...Mr. Pop Top wonders if this might be the only one of its kind still in existence. This was a locally produced campaign item for the American Independent Party, issued by their "Wallace in '68" office on King Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia (address and phone number appear at the bottom!). This was the type of bumper sign that you would paste on yourself, in the days before crack-and-peel stickers! Rare, rare, rare! Wallace, in this run in 1968, became the last independent candidate for President to win any "Electoral" votes (so far). He ran again in 1972 as a Democrat, and was picking up speed when he was shot 5 times by an assassin (the assassin was looking for publicity, and shot Wallace when he decided that he couldn't get to Nixon...he even timed his deed out so that it happened early enough in the afternoon so that it would get onto the "evening news" broadcasts.) The paralyzed Wallace survived and even spoke at the Democratic Convention. In later years he renounced his segregationist ways and became a crusader for human rights. He even forgave his would-be-assassin. Wallace died in 1998. His assassin was freed in 2007. Anyway, here is a real curio for you political junkies out there. Don't let it go to someone else's collection. Only one in stock.
