Original 1968 Yippies "Be-In" Poster *SOLD*
[RARE]
$175.00

(Sorry, out of stock...SOLD for $175) Original 1968 Yippies "Be-In" Poster. From the turbulent 60's, here is a SUPER-RARE counterculture poster promoting a "Be-In". You don't remember "Be-Ins"? You don't remember the 60's??! (Hey, as someone said, if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there!!) The Yippie movement was actually the Youth International Party (YIP)...created by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. The YIP! was dedicated to merging New Left activism and the "hippies" to create a revolution that would be both personal and political--as well as fun. There was a heavy "dramatic" bent to the whole movement. Yippies tended to gather in large cities, particularly in Manhattan's Lower East Side, where Rubin and Hoffman both lived during the 1960's. The Yippie motto was "Do your own thing": don't conform to a specific system of belief but rather be an individual. The "party" was extremely leftist, advocating social justice for all and arguing that all property--including housing, clothing, and food--should be FREE. The Yippies' most famous actions include the attack on the New York Stock Exchange (when Yippies threw $1 bills to the floor and watched as those below fought for it...total cost to the Yippies was just $100.00, but it shut down the whole Exchange for a while...talk about an experiment in greed!!). During the 1968 Democratic Presidential Convention in Chicago, at which they actually nominated a pig (named, of all things, "Pigasus") for President, things got out of hand with the Chicago Police involving many injuries and arrests. The leaders arrested became known as the "Chicago Seven", charged not only with "inciting riot" but "conspiracy" too. Ahh, the official beginning of the Nixon era. Much of the Yippies' activism consisted of guerrilla street theatre and symbolic acts to make a point. This genuine poster promoting one of the "Be-Ins" measures 8 1/2" x 11" and is in VG-F condition. An incredibly UNIQUE piece of memorabilia in the Pop Top Shop...who knows, this could be the only one of these still around! Make it part of your 1960's shrine. Out of stock.
