National Geographic 1971/8 Tasaday Hoax Issue *SOLD*
[RARE]
$15.00

(Sorry, out of stock...SOLD for $15.00) National Geographic Tasaday Hoax Issue, from August 1971. This is a MINT copy of this intriguing issue...one of the few times that Geographic has (allegedly) been "had"! The article in question is the precursor to the famous "Tasaday Hoax", involving the piece entitled "Help for Phillipine Tribes in Trouble". There was an expedition to find what was rumored to be a "lost tribe" of cavepeople in The Philippines who never made it out of the stone age! A group of 26 "cavemen", the "Tasaday", were witnessed living in modern times presumably without any knowledge of clothing, housing, hunting, weapons, pottery or how to cultivate plants! It later turned out that these were people allegedly hired to "act primitive" by certain people in the Ferdinand Marcos regime in order to acquire lands for a "preserve" and generally gain attention and monetary support from the rest of the world. The Tasaday folks were later (after the articles were published) observed walking about in t-shirts, listening to radios, etc. and the lid blew off of the story....but not before National Geographic ran two sets of articles with photos of the grimy posers!! ABC TV's 20/20 program put the nail in the Tasaday coffin with their documentary "The Tribe that Never Was", in which two men who were "Tasaday" fessed up to the grand charade. It has become known as one of the great modern-day hoaxes. Also included in this issue are articles on "Oklahoma", "What's So Special About Spiders", "Tektite II: Science's Window on the Sea", and "All-Girl Team Tests the Habitat". Great issue! Out of stock.
