The Black Panther, T'Challa, was the first modern black superhero. The Black Panther was also one of the first non-caricatured black characters in all of comics to have his own series. It was indeed rare to see a person of color in the comics from their inception in the early 20th century...after years and years of promoting the image of shuffling, minstrel-faced sidekicks and comical, subservient peripheral characters...bellhops, maids, elevator operators, etc. The Black Panther came along and was the embodiment of cool mixed with with incredible strength and courage. To sum it up, The Black Panther kicked ass! Created by the great Stan Lee and legendary artist Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966.
